The 3R's of Rapid Recovery From an Illness

Rest

Usually, the reason we get sick is because we’ve been neglecting one essential health and resilience-building action – rest.

When we’re going through a busy, stressful, or chaotic season, whether individually or as a family, it depletes our body’s natural defenses and weakens our immune systems. This lowered resistance and resilience are what actually allow an illness to take hold, not merely exposure to germs (germ theory).

Therefore, the most important thing our body craves and needs to recover quickly and effectively is rest.

This means not only getting extra sleep but also taking it easy when awake. As an adult, do all you can to avoid checking emails or work messages. For children and teens, limit screen time by keeping them away from phones, texts, YouTube, and TV while they rest. While this can be difficult and even boring, it will significantly speed up recovery.

Replenish

A lack of proper nutrients and nourishment often contributes to illness in the first place, so prioritizing replenishment is key.

  • Stay hydrated with clean water infused with electrolytes and minerals.
  • Consume nutrient-dense foods, including clean proteins, healthy macronutrients, and superfood smoothies.
  • Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables to provide essential vitamins and antioxidants.

While you or your child may not feel much like eating or drinking during the early stages of illness, a return of hunger is a sign that the body is ready to replenish. At this stage, it’s essential to fuel up with the right nutrients to aid recovery.

Recharge

The two systems most impacted during an illness are the immune system and the nervous system, which regulates immune function.

  • Recharge the nervous system with at least one (if not two) neurologically-focused chiropractic adjustments per day during the illness.
  • Support immune recovery with key supplements like Vitamin D, Vitamin C, and zinc.
  • Incorporate natural immune boosters such as bone broth, elderberry syrup, raw local honey, and essential oils.
  • Consider homeopathic remedies to further support recovery and resilience.
